The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Global News has reported that a
19-year-old Afghan refugee has been identified as the victim of a fatal car
crash in Delta, British Columbia.
The victim, Masihullah Tavakoli, had recently turned 19,
according to his family. The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon at the
intersection of 75A Avenue and 118th Street.
Family members said Tavakoli was not at fault. His sister,
Zainab Tavakoli, expressed shock over his death, describing him as a caring and
responsible young man.
Authorities said a Tesla vehicle was seen traveling at a
high speed before jumping a curb, crossing the sidewalk, and striking
Tavakoli’s car, which was stopped at a sign.
At the time of the incident, Tavakoli was driving three
neighborhood children to play soccer. The children were taken to the hospital,
and officials said one remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.
Witnesses and family members described Tavakoli as someone
who cared deeply for children in his community. A friend, Ali Barylali, said
the loss has been devastating.
Delta police said investigators are gathering evidence and
seeking witnesses. No charges have been filed so far.
Data from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia
shows dozens of crashes have occurred at nearby intersections between 2020 and
2024, raising concerns about road safety in the area.
Family and friends are continuing to mourn the loss as the
investigation remains ongoing.
