Eva Hammelmüller recently climbed Juturna 5.14d at Götterwandl in Austria. This year alone, she has climbed three routes graded 5.14c, three graded 5.14d, and sent her first 5.15a. While she has sent at least half a dozen 5.14d and a couple of 5.14c/d routes over the course of her life, the Austrian climber called Juturna her “longest project ever”.
“It was an intense process, about 14 sessions and probably more than 40 attempts,” said Hammelmüller on Instagram. “After falling on the final moves because of a stupid foot slip last year, the snow arrived, and I had to wait. This year, after 3 sessions, I finally stood on top of this undercling-endurance-beast. So many doubts, nerves, skin parts, and fights went into this route. Thanks to you, Juturna (9a), my biceps grew at least one centimetre – I swear.”
Juturna was established by Dutch climber Jorg Verhoeven in August 2020. It has since seen repeats from some of the world’s best, including Adam Ondra, who climbed it in only two goes. On Hammelmüller’s 8a.nu page, she said the route felt harder than Hades 5.14d – another Götterwandl climb that she sent back in October 2024.
Hammelmüller is an active competition climber, but she is more known for her big sends on rock. When she goes on climbing trips, she is always sure to rack up an impressive list of sends. She has had a very sendy year so far. In January, she climbed Anchorage 5.14c at Terminal in Italy. In February, she climbed Alien Carnage 5.14c at Castillon in France – two days later, she sent WRC 5.14d. At the end of that month, she climbed Sans complexe 5.14d in Lourmarin, France. In April, she climbed another 5.14c with Goosfraba in Arco, Italy. Later that month, she climbed her first 5.15a with her ascent of Bombardino in Arco.
