Oslo, May 5 (SANA) Norway’s Energy Ministry said Tuesday it had approved the reopening of three old gas fields in the North Sea, with production expected to resume in 2028 to help support European gas supplies.

Albuskjell, Vest Ekofisk and Tommeliten Gamma fields were shut down in 1998. Located less than 10 km west of the giant Ekofisk field, they will be operated by US-based ConocoPhillips with investments estimated at about 19 billion Norwegian kroner (around $2 billion). Production is expected to continue until 2048, according to AFP.

Recoverable reserves are estimated at between 90 million and 120 million barrels of oil equivalent. The gas will be exported to the German city of Emden, while condensates will be transported to Teesside in the United Kingdom.

Energy Minister Terje Aasland said that Norwegian oil and gas production represents an important contribution to Europe’s energy security, adding that developing new fields helps maintain supply levels, particularly amid global conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.
