(ABC 6 News)–Vice President J.D. Vance was in Iowa tonight, stumping for U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn.

Vance’s visit to Des Moines comes during a tense time in the nation as the Iran War rages on.

Vance touched on that subject, along with many others, including taxes, immigration, jobs, and housing. He also talked about how a strong government impacts people in a positive way.

“It’s not rocket science,” Vance said. “It’s a simple principle. If you have a government that fights for you, it can make your life easier. It can make it easier for you to start a business or to work an amazing job.”

Vance noted he met two Gold Star families during his visit. He talked about the sacrifices these people have made and how it shaped his worldview.

Vance was originally scheduled to be in Iowa last week for multiple events including one with Turning Point USA, but that event was cancelled.

Iowa Democrats also responded after Vance’s speech.

“After a decade of one-party rule, it’s clear that Iowa has been heading in the wrong direction and hardworking families are now paying the price,” said Rita Hart, the Iowa Democratic Party chair.

The primaries in Iowa will be June 2.
