The number of people killed in a fire at the Argavan shopping centre in Tehran has risen to eight, with 36 others injured, according to Iranian authorities.

The prosecutor’s office has ordered the detention of the building’s developer and instructed investigators to determine those responsible for the incident, IRIB reported.

The fire broke out in the Andisheh district, where emergency services responded to the blaze. The local fire service confirmed that the building was fully evacuated and that the fire has since been contained.

Officials said the flames spread rapidly along the exterior of the structure due to flammable composite cladding, contributing to the scale of the incident.
