I’m all for a republic but I don’t think people understand how complex and intricate abolishing the monarchy would actually be, essentially handing over their powers to the government, their land to private corporations, all of our laws etc etc I’m not sure the grass would be greener on the other side…
It would probably be best for republicans to come to some kind of more exact consensus on what would replace the monarchy before asking us to decide to abolish it. We could then have some basis on which to evaluate the potential benefits and risks. Saying that it could be sort of like Germany, Ireland, Portugal, or perhaps Iceland, and that it would all be generally much more democratic in every way doesn’t quite cut it, and that’s the best I could find on their web site.
Debating “yes” versus “no” can be somewhat difficult when nobody knows exactly what one of the options would mean in practice.
>Mr Mitchell said the timing of Republic’s stunt “is as disgraceful as it is distasteful and sadly it’s tediously predictable”.
Tedious. Boring.
The last ditch argument of people who like the status quo but don’t have any real case to justify it.
When people keep going an about Boris lying all the time, it isn’t because they are boring, it is because he lied to parliament and nothing has been done about it, and that isn’t acceptable.
When people keep complaining about the ever increasing problems Brexit is causing, they aren’t being tedious. They have a right to expect something will be done about it.
Now people going on and on about wanting an elected, accountable head of state. Nothing tedious about it. It is because that is what the citizens of this country deserve.
Because the last time the UK was a republic went really well.
You still need a head of state like most countries have. So there would need to be an elected President of Britain.
There is one down the road from me. It is definitely the time to discuss the issue, if not now, when? Support is growing and the case for having a monarchy is growing weaker as the likes of Barbados leave the Commonwealth and countries like Jamaica are considering the same. Elizabeth is popular but Charles is far from it, William is respected but even he is not adored like the Queen is. We might see the end of the monarchy within our lifetime and it would be good to discuss what will replace that.
The monarchy is a relic from the past but I still think it has its uses.
Imagine for one moment having Boris as your Head of State.

Disgraceful and distasteful ? How ? It’s not vulgar it’s not calling for a French style revolution it’s advertisement for a different way that’s all.
What better time could there be for it while we celebrate a women in a fancy hat that costs more than about half the population will make in their lifetime combined.
If we did abolish the monarchy we would have to rewrite a decent chunk of the british legal system, especially the bit concerned about actually ruling. Would you REALLY trust any of our current hyperpartisan politicians to write the rules for ruling? I sure as shit don’t.
The monarchy is an ancient institution, sure. It subsists on taxpayers money (even if they supposedly bring more money in). And sure, andrew is a sweaty nonce.
We absolutely need to trim the tree, I don’t think anyone really opposes that, but to completely abolish the monarchy is downright dangerous with our current ideologues of incompetence
Billboards? Have delightfully 1980s of them.
What else are they planning? Sandwich board men and light aircraft towing banners.
Problem is it’s just BREXIT again. A group want the end of the system we have. When pressed for details on what might replace it they can’t give any or just disagree with each other.
No thanks, I’m quite happy living in a monarchy.
Are they offering to rewrite all the laws if we do get rid of them?
“It isn’t the right time to discuss this” is the fallback position of people who have no argument.
What is ‘royalty’ they’re not better than us their ancestors just better at killing and suppressing yours. Why the fuck do we allow them to enjoy that free ride off the back of the Nation… so fucking sick of it, same old excused about tourism, open Buckingham Palace and sell tickets make 100x more money without the inbred racist nazi related fucks living inside.
I don’t care. At all. You do.
Here’s an idea. Stop soending taxes on repairing their properties and then in the same sentiment, stop taking the money they earn from leasing land to farmers. See who ends up better off
Anyone who genuinely thinks that a Republic is better than a constitutional monarchy is a fucking idiot who has never studied the political structures of nations, and the wider geopolitical landscape
Could they not have found a better front man than this?
The only thing we need is cuts in funding to the monarchy, anything else is completely unnecessary and would make a whole mess out of something. we have bigger priorities than this, we are in a recession and brexit still hasn’t been sorted and you have idiots like them trying to throw more wood onto the fire which is the current state of British politics.
I don’t get when people say she served us all so well over the last 70years.
From what i see she sailed on a big boat for a bit shook hands with presidents dictators and other public figures had a slight chit chat and then goes back to a life of opulence.
I mean i would do that gig if i could so I don’t blame them. Especially if the masses adore you for it.
I used to think end it after Liz too but having seen the absolute mess made of brexit and the enormous cost of any kind of structural change its made me change my mind.
I think this would be a lot bigger and harder to implement than people think. Even in stuff as basic as changing the money, laws that reference a monarch, new national anthem etc. I don’t trust our government to do this effectively or efficiently at all. Worst case you end up with something that brings none of the benefits of being a republic, causes more harm than what we had before, costs billions and drags on for years distracting us from the big issues we can/should be tackling as a society
I think a downsizing and downplaying of the Royal family akin to the swedish/danish/Dutch ones would probably be best with a look towards possible removal later. Lots of commentators say Charles plans to cut down the monarchy to just the direct line of succession, cutting out the likes of Prince Andrew and all the Royal cousins etc. That would be a good start.
I think numerous commonwealth countries will stop being a monarchy after Liz though. Suspect NZ will be one of the first. Also think it’s realistic they change their name and flag in the next few decades
I’d be what… ~£1.20 richer per year if we got shot of them.
I doubt becoming a republic would solve our issues. Just look at the French.
At least with the Queen you know Boris has at least 1 uncomfortable meeting in his weekly schedule.
