The head of Government says that due to the ongoing fuel price crisis Lithuania is highly interested that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened.

“America and Iran are engaged in the negotiation process, yet our, European, […] interest is the reopening of the strait as soon as possible so that tankers, oil would continue moving to Europe, [and] to other strategic places. Otherwise, we will have a very deep economic crisis. If help is needed – all of Europe unites and provides assistance,” Ruginienė said in an interview to the news agency ELTA.

The prime minister added that “the context of the decision is being harmonised” and some things cannot be discussed publicly.

“I believe the State Defence Council will adopt the best decision, which we, without a doubt, will have to submit to the Seimas,” she said.

The prime minister added that measures are being coordinated “in the entire NATO context”.

As reported, conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel has disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Global energy prices have soared as the crucial route for oil, gas and fertilisers has been affected.
