Stefka Kostadinova handed over the leadership of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee to Vesela Lecheva more than a year after losing the presidential election at the General Assembly.
The two held a working meeting during which the former high jump world record holder officially signed a power of attorney authorising Lecheva to carry out the duties until her formal inauguration.
The new chairperson had proposed this solution months earlier, when it became clear that the process was being delayed by legal appeals against the General Assembly’s decision. At the time, Kostadinova said she would wait for the court rulings.
The dispute did not affect Bulgaria’s participation in the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, where Lecheva led the delegation after being recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
“Such situations should not be repeated in sports organisations,” Lecheva said.
