MetService has posted an update on two weather systems tracking towards the South Island, and warned the first is set to hit later today, bringing heavy rain and possible thunderstorms to some areas.
In a post to Facebook, MetService said the first of the two systems was tracking towards the bottom of the South Island, with heavy rain spreading north. The heaviest range will fall about the ranges, with lesser amounts toward the coasts.
It has placed a number of warnings and watches along the west coast of the South Island over the next few days, and said there would then be a brief reprieve before the next system on Friday.
Orange warnings were issued for the Tasman District northwest of Motueka, Buller, Westland and Fiordland north of Doubtful Sound.
On the warnings, MetService said streams and rivers “may rise rapidly”.
“Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.
“Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.”
