WANA (May 07) – A spokesperson for Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry announced that the country is prepared to host negotiations between Iran and the United States, emphasizing that Bern supports any diplomatic initiative aimed at reducing tensions and facilitating peace efforts.
Melanie Gugelmann, spokesperson for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, told TASS news agency that Switzerland is ready to facilitate talks between Tehran and Washington if requested by the parties involved.
Responding to a question about Geneva being mentioned as a possible venue for the negotiations, she said: “Switzerland is always ready to offer its good offices.”
Referring to Switzerland’s traditional role in international mediation, Gugelmann added: “Switzerland is willing to support any diplomatic initiative aimed at facilitating peace.”
The Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesperson further noted that the ministry remains in contact with all relevant parties.
The remarks come after Axios reported that Tehran and Washington were allegedly close to reaching a short memorandum of understanding to ease tensions, and that negotiations over its possible details could be held in Islamabad or Geneva. The report was based on unnamed and unverified sources.
Reacting to these claims, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament described the reports about the negotiations as part of a U.S. “psychological operation” following what he called Washington’s military failure in the Strait of Hormuz.
