A steady stream of recent investments is reinforcing Montgomery County’s position as a leading destination for business growth and innovation. With industries spanning life sciences, technology, defense, and advanced communications, the county continues to attract companies of all sizes, driving job creation and long-term economic growth for residents.

One of the most notable developments comes from the life sciences sector, where global leaders are deepening their presence. In March, Samsung Biologics, South Korea’s largest biotech company, opened its first U.S.-based manufacturing facility in Rockville. The move followed the company’s acquisition of the former Human Genome Sciences site and preserved more than 500 jobs, further strengthening the county’s nationally recognized life sciences ecosystem.

Biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has also continued to invest in Montgomery County, where it has been headquartered in Gaithersburg since 2013. Building on the momentum of its $300 million cell therapy manufacturing facility in Rockville, which opened in Spring 2025, the company recently announced plans for an additional state-of-the-art facility in Gaithersburg. The expansion is expected to create 100 new jobs and further grow its research and development footprint in the region.

“By choosing to expand in Maryland, AstraZeneca is strengthening its presence in a hub of scientific talent, innovation, and advanced life sciences,” said U.S. Congresswoman April McClain Delaney in an announcement. “This historic investment is fantastic news for our communities, businesses, and workers along the I-270 Technology Corridor, who are driving our state’s progress. We are proud to welcome this expansion and remain committed to supporting AstraZeneca’s scientists and staff, as their work improves and saves lives.”

Beyond life sciences, companies at the forefront of emerging industries are also growing in Montgomery County. Advanced nuclear reactor and fuel developer X-energy launched its initial public offering on April 24, reaching a valuation of $11.9 billion shortly after going public. The company recently consolidated its Rockville operations into a new 125,000-square-foot headquarters at the Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg and plans to retain 260 full-time employees while adding more than 525 high-skilled jobs over the next six years.

Arcellx, a Montgomery County-based company that began at the Germantown Innovation Center in 2015—one of the County’s four incubators/centers—has now grown into a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing customizable CAR-T cell therapies. Its recent $7.8 billion acquisition by Gilead Sciences—the company’s largest since 2020—exemplifies the attractiveness and interest in the innovation that spins out of a supportive ecosystem.

International companies are also attracted to the County’s strategic location, talent, and diversity. Vaisala Xweather, a Finland-based climate intelligence company, recently opened a Gaithersburg office with 20 employees and plans to expand in the near future. Companies from all over the world have consistently chosen to establish operations in Montgomery County, supported by a plethora of resources, proximity to federal agencies and a culturally rich quality of life.

The continued investments reflect a broader trend: sustained collaboration between the county, state, and local partners help create an environment where businesses can succeed at every stage of growth. The impact is measurable: every $1 invested in economic development in Montgomery County generates an average of $11.48 in tax revenue, job creation, and private investment, along with more than $138 in total economic impact across the local economy.

With a highly educated and diverse workforce, a strong concentration of global companies, and a coordinated approach to economic development, Montgomery County is primed to retain its position as a top destination for innovation and companies across all industries.
