Brexit to blame for airports chaos, says Sadiq Khan

  1. Well yes, it certainly makes things more complicated – but on the list of Brexit negatives, this rates fairly low on the list for me.

  2. Kinda but not really airliners and airports have in the last 2 years have sacked alot of staff in the thousands and are begging for Foreign staff which has been rejected.

  3. Brexit is just another problem being put on top of the crisis along with the rest, overbooking, less staff as they sacked them over covid.

It’s just another problem but it isn’t just the cause.

  4. Schiphol (NL) has the exact same problem: 4hr wait times, they closed entry to the terminal at some point. KLM cancelled over 40 flights.

  5. >As with lorry drivers, we found the solutions were actually in making sure decent salaries were paid, that people were trained here in this country, that people were attracted to a job not just by better salaries, but also better conditions as well.

I hate to say it but I agree with the Tory minister. Brexit isn’t the cause – it has just exposed the underlying problem of UK firms paying poorly and treating their staff like shit.

  6. I just love how our politicians have gone from blaming the EU for every problem to blaming leaving the EU for every problem.

The airlines have over promised. They got rid of too many staff in covid. One of my food delivery drivers was an air steward for example. Another worked on cruises. Both remained as drivers after the pandemic because they found they preferred the lifestyle of not regularly staying away from home.

  7. So if airlines need to recruit more staff, UK staff, at higher wages, who is going to agree to pay more for their holiday? 🤔

  8. Oversimplification.

Like saying, sacking a lot of your staff for not taking a mandated drug, then trying to start the system back up without that staff was always going to be a failure

  9. It’s more the shortage of ground support staff that is the problem. Someone above mentioned Manchester and Stanstead having particular issues – both airports, plus East Midlands, are primarily staffed by MAG. Others use companies like Swissport, ABM, Menzies, Wilson James, etc. These are the companies that laid people off rather than putting them on furlough and now cannot recruit replacement staff and/or get them trained and security screened quickly enough. Service companies are not exactly renowned for paying well. A lot of these former airport staff have different jobs with better wages, better conditions, better hours – no wonder they don’t want to go back.

  10. When you get rid of most of your staff so you dont have to pay them during lockdown and then when its over pay shit wages and crap working conditions what do you expect.
