Search operations have resumed in Latvia’s Latgale region for a second drone that entered the country’s airspace from the direction of Russia and subsequently crashed on Latvian territory, officials have said.
Latvian Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis confirmed that search efforts will continue on May 8, according to Delfi.
He said the drone is believed to have crashed in a remote and sparsely populated area of Rezekne Municipality. Authorities temporarily suspended the search on Thursday evening after concerns were raised that the object could contain explosives.
The National Armed Forces of Latvia are continuing to analyse surveillance data in an effort to more precisely determine the crash location, which has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Residents have been urged to avoid any suspicious objects and to immediately report them by calling emergency services at 112.
Latvian military officials have stated that two drones are now known to have crashed on Latvian territory. They also warned that, in the context of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, similar incidents may recur.
It was also reported that on May 7, Latvia detected additional unidentified drones entering its airspace from the direction of Russia. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the devices are linked to Russian or Ukrainian forces.
