A huge crash blocked the road inside the final kilometres of Friday’s 2026 Giro d’Italia opening round along the Black Sea in Bulgaria, the 13th country outside Italy to host a Grande Partenza. French rider Paul Magnier emerged out the dust, and his first Grand Tour victory gave him the first pink jersey of the 109th edition. Derek Gee-West was top Canadian in 54th, while Nickolas Zukowsky placed 96th.

The Course

Although two 1.1-km, 2.6 percent hills acted at Cat. 4 climbs, this was one flat 147-km route from Nessebar southwest to Burgas before two 21-km circuits. The Red Bull Kilometre, offering time bonuses of six, four and two seconds, was 33 km from the finish in Burgas.

As soon as the flag dropped on the 109th edition, two riders from Italian ProTeams bolted to make up the first breakaway. The intrepid duo didn’t pull out much more than a 2:00 lead. Soudal, Unibet Rose Rockets and Lidl-Trek were all prominent at the front of the peloton.

Diego Pablo Sevilla of Polti VisitMalta was first over both little climbs, and thus the Spaniard would wear the first blue KOM jersey at the end of the day. Although the two ProTeam chaps took the six and four seconds at the Red Bull Kilometre, the two seconds elicited action in the peloton. The fugitives were swept up with 22 km remaining.

The colour blocks formed as the field headed back to Burgas. Uno-X led into the final 3 km. The road was wide but elbows clashed. Decathlon-CMA-CGA pulled the field under the red kite. A huge crash when the road narrowed blocked everyone but 10 riders.

From this tiny, lucky selection, Paul Magnier was the fastest, taking the first race lead.

Stage 2 is the second longest of the 109th edition, and sets a Cat. 3 climb 10 km from the finish line in Veliko Tarnovo.
