WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Mother’s Day is around the corner, and flower shops across Wichita are busy, but elevated gas prices are impacting their bottom line.
For Scott Noah and Steve Waller, the owners of Bloomerang Floral and Gift, being overloaded with orders near Mother’s Day is not unusual.
“Mother’s Day is more than a week-long event, so we started getting orders as early as Monday,” Noah said. “Once you get to Thursday and Friday and Saturday, it’s just bananas.”
This year, there’s a new challenge for flower shops – gas prices.
“Once we got a little further into the higher price per barrel of oil and all that kind of stuff, and gas started working its way out to follow that, the price in flowers really jumped,” Noah said.
Gas prices have increased operating costs for flower shops, who not only receive flowers from overseas, but also make local deliveries. Despite this, shop owners are still making sure customers get a good deal for Mother’s Day.
“We never want to be, you know, a shop that gouges or does anything like that. We keep it very real for everyday people, so they can get something pretty at a reasonable price,” Noah said.
It’s not too late to get something to surprise mom. Bloomerang Flower and Gift will be open on Mother’s Day until 3 p.m.
“Especially during Mother’s Day, knocking on the door and the mom’s face lights up and, ‘Oh, is this for me?’ And I’m like, ‘It’s for you, darling. Someone is thinking about you.’ That is always nice, to spread a little joy,” Noah said.
