An fuel storage depot in Latvia’s eastern city of Rēzekne was hit by military drones early on Thursday, May 7th not once, but twice, it has emerged more than 24 hours later.

According to a preliminary investigation by State Police and the examination of the wreckage by experts, the State Police has determined that two drones struck the empty oil storage facility, not once as was initially assumed.

The criminal proceedings, which the police opened for crimes against the state, have been transferred to the State Security Service (VDD), one of Latvia’s three security services.

If local residents have any materials related to the incident – videos, photos, or any other information, the police are urging them not to share this on social media sites, but rather to contact the VDD.

“All of this material is being analyzed in conjunction with the information available to the authorities and may be useful in the investigation. We thank the residents for their cooperation and the information they provided,” the police statement said.

The somewhat belated realisation that the oil depot was hit twice rather than once is likely to cause further embarrassment to officials who have at no time suggested the oil depot might have been hit by more than one drone.

In situations where a suspicious drone or its debris is detected, residents are urged to immediately call 112, indicating the location, time, and other known information. Under no circumstances should you approach the drone or its debris.
