More than a decade after “Junun” – the hypnotic 2015 collaboration recorded inside a fort in Rajasthan, India – Jonny Greenwood, Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur and Indian ensemble Rajasthan Express reunite for “Ranjha,” out May 8. To get straight to the point: “Ranjha” is an excellent album – rich, dynamic and expressive, layered with color and texture. It pulls the listener into the rhythmic vortex of the opening track, “Shiqwa,” and keeps the ear alert and fascinated through the ecstatic finale of “Sharminda.”
