US President Donald Trump’s administration has filed an appeal against a recent US trade court ruling that a 10-percent global tariff imposed in February is illegal.
The appeal was filed with the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday, one day after the ruling by the US Court of International Trade.
Washington imposed the 10-percent levies on a wide range of countries and regions using Section 122 of the Trade Act. They were a replacement that came after the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s earlier tariffs.
The provision allows such measures to remain in place for no more than 150 days. This means the measures are due to expire in late July.
Ahead of the deadline, the Trump administration is currently conducting an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act into its trading partners, such as Japan, China and the European Union. It is looking into whether they have unfair trade practices such as excessive production capacity.
The outcome of the court case, as well as the scope of any additional tariff measures, is drawing close attention.
