Why so high in Belgium compared to the rest of Western Europe?

  1. If you search suicide in the sub you should find plenty of talk about it, this gets asked pretty much every few days.

  2. we register more (accurately) than many other countries?

*+ Belgians are often a fairly repressed, introvert, miserable people.. living in an overly complicated country that’s inundated with kafka-esque situations & logic..*

There’s a reason we have some of the best food & (alcoholic) drink in the world…and the most cultural festivals per capita in the world… it calms our minds and hearts..

  3. Well it’s also that many of the more religious countries vastly underreport suicide. It’s still considered a major sin.

  4. It’s one of those things you can research to death, because the conclusion is quite depressing.

  5. The only things we actively complain about, are things we believe our peers can relate to (e.g. traffic, weather, taxes, politics).

We don’t talk about the real stuff whenever we actually need help or support.

  6. btw, in greece (and probably other countries from the balkans), they’re likely to report your suicide as an “accident”, so don’t be fooled by these statistics, I commend the Belgians for having the balls to not undermine the suffering of people as so many other states do

  7. I think it’s because Belgians as a whole are an introverted closed off bunch living in an overly industrialised and urbanised country.

  8. Could it be that also euthanasia is counted as a ‘suicide’ since it’s basically also a person deciding to end one’s life?

Other than that, I think a lot is due to how you are raised and since our parents were raised by the generation that suffered the war and collaboration period, they were raised to not openly discuss any issues with anybody? This is then passed on to the next generation without much thought and I think it causes quite a lot of mental issues that are not currently addressed.

I do think it might get better over time with more people realizing this, going into therapy and not passing on the generational trauma that Belgium suffered during the war period.

  9. Is this because assisted suicide is allowed? I don’t know what the situation is in surrounding countries with regards to assisted suicide.

This statistic pops up regularly on this sub, I would hope steps are taken to provide more mental health services to people in need in general.

  10. Depressing shithole country with ridiculous taxes on middle and lower income no work life balance rampant racism and misogyny
Politics is a shitshow need I go on

  11. **belgium** population density is 375/km². 17 suicides per year

**finlande** has pretty the same sociopolitic structure but only half of his population with a density of 16/km². 14 suicides per year. if it had the same population as belgium (the double), its suicide rate would be 28 (the double).

**tchequie** has the same population as belgium, with a density of 136/km² (less than half). it has a suicide rate of 14 too. with the same density, it would be something like 37.

**if you compare what must be compared, the Belgium has a really low suicide score.**

Ergo : this map is a trap. it give absolute score to things with relative numbers.

it is by the same process that tourists come to think that all belgians are perfect trilingual people who drink 2 liters of beer each day.
