The British royal family’s jewelry collection spans nearly every precious stone imaginable, but aquamarines hold a particular place in royal history. Named for the seawater hue they evoke, the pale blue gemstones have long been associated with calm, good fortune, and protection—and, in some traditions, a happy marriage. That association may help explain why the Queen Mother gave Princess Anne an aquamarine tiara for her 1973 wedding, and why Meghan Markle wore an aquamarine ring from Princess Diana’s collection at the evening reception following her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.

Some of the most significant aquamarine pieces in the royal collection came from Brazil, where the stone is commonly found: Queen Elizabeth’s Brazilian Aquamarine Parure was given to her by the Brazilian people to mark her coronation in 1953, cementing the stone’s association with milestone occasions.

Here is a closer look at some of the brightest aquamarine pieces the royal family has in its possession.
