Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis began his weekly review of the government’s work by referring to Mother’s Day and the importance of family, before addressing issues related to the economy, energy, geopolitics and everyday life.
He focused on initiatives concerning energy security and renewable energy sources, the early repayment of public debt, and the strengthening of debt settlement arrangements through the out-of-court mechanism.
Particular emphasis he also placed on Greece’s international relations with the United Arab Emirates and Jordan during a period of heightened instability in the Middle East.
At the same time, he stressed the government’s initiatives in education, the use of AI, school renovations, regional infrastructure, environmental protection, cultural investments and Greece’s new technological capabilities, ranging from microsatellites to the development of audiovisual production.
Regarding energy, he referred to plans to increase renewable energy storage capacity to 700 MW by the end of the year and to 1 GW by 2027. The new law, the Greek premier noted, provides for more renewable energy, cleaner and more affordable energy, protection for areas within the Natura network, and more practical solutions for citizens and businesses.
“These measures follow our collective achievement in making Greece, for the past two years, a country that exports energy rather than imports it,” he said. “The major announcement of the week is our decision to proceed with yet another early debt repayment, amounting to 6.9 billion euros, on the first bailout loans Greece received from European countries,” he noted, adding: “As public debt decreases, so does the stability of the economy and the country’s ability to support citizens and businesses without slipping back into the dead ends of the past.” Mitsotakis also stressed that “Greece is emerging as one of the first countries to establish a comprehensive framework for the introduction and use of artificial intelligence in secondary education.”
