Johnny Kenny looks set to miss the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming friendly matches due to a knee injury.

The striker, currently on loan at Bolton Wanderers, had been preparing for the League 1 play-offs.

But he was absent from the squad for the 1-0 semi-final first leg win over Bradford City yesterday.

The Celtic player had been in superb form in his loan spell, including a run of five goals in as many games for promotion-chasing Bolton.

Kenny has ligament damage and will see a specialist to decide whether knee surgery is required.

The timing is particularly bad for the former Sligo Rovers man with his future up in the air.

Out of favour at his parent club, the 22-year-old is likely to be in demand from clubs in England due to the way he ended the regular campaign.

The international window, which includes matches with Qatar and Canada, was set to provide Kenny with the chance to add to his two caps having come close to scoring in the clash with North Macedonia recently.

But, even if surgery is not needed, it is almost certain he will sit out the games in a bid to recover for the new campaign.
