The US military has significantly increased the number of reconnaissance flights near the coast of Cuba. According to journalists, since February 2026, the US has conducted at least 25 flights using aircraft and drones.

Journalists, citing open aviation data from FlightRadar24, note that the flights were carried out near Havana and Santiago de Cuba. Some of the aircraft approached the country’s coast at a distance of about 40 miles.
According to journalists, the following participated in the flights:
P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft;
RC-135V Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft;
MQ-4C Triton drones.
The article notes that until February, such flights in the area were almost never recorded in open sources. The journalists also noted that the increased intelligence came after US President Donald Trump’s tougher statements regarding Cuba.
In particular, Trump shared a post on Truth Social that mentioned a possible visit to a “free Havana” before the end of his presidential term. After that, the US president announced an oil blockade of the island and expanded sanctions against Cuba.
CNN noted that a similar increase in US reconnaissance flights was previously observed before military operations in Venezuela and Iran.
The journalists also noted that the planes participating in the flights were technically capable of concealing their location, but did not do so. According to the authors of the article, this may indicate the demonstrative nature of the operations.
The Pentagon has declined to comment on the flights near Cuba, while Cuban authorities have said they pose no threat to U.S. national security and remain open to negotiations.
As previously reported, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sharply criticized the Cuban government, calling it a “big problem.” At the same time, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared his readiness to send the army to Venezuela amid US actions in the region.
