Alle Migros-Genossenschaften sagen Nein zum Alkoholverkauf

  1. It ended up feeling a bit like a vote of no confidence in the current management. Time to take a hard look in the mirror for Migros…

  2. They argued that they’re losing out on profits, because people would buy in other stores.
It’s a cooperative, it should not be about profits in the first place!

  3. This was probably one of the most ingenious marketing campaign I’ve seen in a long time. What ever the outcome – Migros will profit.

  4. That’s fair, but I still find it kinda hypocritical when they often have Denners and Kiosks in the same building (both of which sell alcohol) and sell alcohol on their online shop already.

  5. mildly disappointed, I really wanted to see what Migros’ answer to the the Coop Prix Garantie lager would’ve been to be honest

  6. Morally: Nice!

Financially I do believe it hurts Migros somewhat (all the people going to Coop because they always shop for beer and want to do that in one go with the rest of their groceries).

  7. I voted in favor but people didn’t want it. Good. Would have been convenient, but it’s not like anything important. Consider it Migros marketing. Not that they need it anyway.

  8. As a foreigner (for now) living in Switzerland, I think this is one of the best examples I’ve seen of how well the Swiss voting (I know this technically is not a real referendum) system works:

    * it shows that people are fairly well educated and make sensible choices
    * it shows that marketing (in this case alcohol industry) doesn’t have a massive hold on the public opinion
    * it shows that cooperatives make sense. If this would have been a purely private company, there would have been no way they could not have sold alcohol, unless the owner (dictator?) of the shop would have had a very strong opinion. People would have no other way to voice their concern; something like: “oh you can stop Migros selling alcohol by shopping somewhere else” is a free market fantasy and wouldn’t have worked at all.

  9. Not that I’m passionate about this topic, but I like consistency when it comes to values, and the founder of Migros had many social ideals.

If they had abandoned this one, it could’ve lead to abandoning others.

  10. Love it! It’s the only kid-friendly shop here. Also for sober people and tobacco addicts that try to get clean the Migros is fantastic.
People can get their fix in so many places, it really is ok, that the Migros stays away of this.

Even if there’s a Denner and Kiosk in the same building, I really appreciate that I can walk into a Migros and buy all free from alcohol and tobacco.

I still double-check every drink, but it’s just better that way.
