Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys believes that relocating part of the US military contingent from Germany to countries bordering Russia and Belarus would strengthen NATO’s defensive capabilities.
He made the remarks ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on May 11, stressing that it is critically important for Lithuania that American troops remain in Europe, Caliber.Az reports, citing Lithuanian media.
“When it comes to deployment, they should be stationed where their presence creates the greatest added value. Deployment on the frontline would be the most effective for deterrence purposes,” Budrys said.
The Lithuanian foreign minister also stated that the country is ready to host additional allied troops.
“We are ready. But we also need to share this common objective – keeping the Americans in Europe,” he added.
