In this kitchen by Sarah Scales Design Studio, flipper doors make it easy to access the small appliances, and they instantly visually declutter the space when they’re not in use. “It’s too hard to work in [a small] space with traditional cabinet doors that are open,” says Scales. “Pocketing them into the cabinet just makes sense.” This way, your kitchen tools can still be within easy reach, but without throwing the space’s vibe way off.
Differentiate your cabinets
Whether by using a different material like stainless steel, a collection of dramatic colors, or mixing open shelving with closed shelving, creating variety by mixing up your cabinets can add personality to a kitchen plan regardless of the square footage. In this project by Goesling Group, the kitchen and living space are directly against each other, and different cabinet types help to delineate those spaces even if there’s not much wiggle room between the two. “The space is layered but uncluttered,” Sarah Goesling, principal of Goesling Group, tells AD. While it might not be space-saving, it does make for a much more visually impactful space.
