The exhibition “The Neanderthal in Me: Bacho Kiro Cave and Traces of a Shared Human Past” opens at the National History Museum in Sofia on May 12, 2026.
The exhibition presents Neanderthals not as primitive creatures from a distant past, but as a distinct human species that lived alongside Homo sapiens and left a mark on the genetic heritage of modern humans.
According to contemporary scientific research, contacts between Neanderthals and the first modern humans were more complex and closer than long believed.
Through scientific and visual storytelling, the exhibition traces the place of Neanderthals in human history and highlights discoveries that challenge long-established perceptions of the species.
