Malta Metro as proposed.

  1. It makes no sense. Why i should Walk a km to arrive at the metro station, then take the metro, do One stop, drop off, and Walk another km to my final destination? Malta Is so small that It needs a more granular system of stops, like the buses do.

  2. Tax payers can’t afford something like this after supporting people through covid for 2 years, current inflation, and a possibly disastrous recession around the corner.

When it’s finally time to pay the piper and people begin to really suffer, the gov et al is going to blame the ‘old’ system in lock-step with the globalists, instead of their deliberate gross mismanagement/incompetency.

  3. Busses killed the train, a long time ago. Buses are the solution once more. I love metros, but the problem is here and now

  4. Ah so kieku if i want to go to work, from zebbug i have to bus it or take my car to attard, to catch the metro to go to mriehel. Pero thats probably just my route ay thats effed.

  5. That would be absolutely awesome.

Having said that: it’s not happening. Malta is a rock, it’s too hard. They don’t even put electricity and phone cables in the ground. It’s just not practical, sadly.

  6. I mean this makes sense. The majority of commuting happens to Valletta, Sliema and St Julian’s. I would consider strong bus lanes connecting the metro to the closest metro, and a person would have 3 changes maximum to arrive at their destination. Once people enjoy the freedoms that come with fast metro, it will pick up speed, and even increase the walkability of our towns. An hour long commute in your car vs 2/3 metro changes for half that time without having to waste petrol, and can multitask? Much more preferable.

Personally, I would have a bus take me to my town centre to materdei and have maximum 2 changes. On sunny relaxed days I could even just walk to the town centre. I would use my car for supermarket days and when requiring to take large items with me.

We underestimate the allure of nice new things. When materdei was built, private hospitals were quickly abandoned despite being technically more prestigious…and we can see the result with a certain videographers handiwork recently…

  7. If I was a more conspiratorial man, I’d ask. What traffic is this map supposed to reduce, Cars or Busses?

Take a real look at this map, with all but a few exceptions, each of these destinations already get dozens of busses per hour.

Sure I can see the advantages, fattest nation in Europe, it will be getting people more exercise!

This is a short-minded plan for political points. It is not a long-term transport solution for the island.

If this was labelled “phase 1” I’d be cool with it, but demanding to know what the other phases are. But this is all we get. No long-term plan just a poorly thought out but “cheap” scheme to keep people quiet.

  8. Would be so dumb not to extend it all the way north. Should definitely have people taking the ferry being able to jump right on the metro

  9. Any metro that requires people from Sliema to take 2-3 trains to go to Valletta is not well thought out. Those are the main connection.

Like yes other places are important but the biggest concentration of movement happens in that direction.

Don’t get me wrong we need a massive change in the the public transport system as it’s not sustainable but this doesn’t feel well thought out.

  10. Could someone help me understand at what stage this project is. I mean what’s the likelihood of it happening?

  11. My comment stuck a nerve with people. Busses need priority lanes. Digging the whole Island seems the most reasonable solution to people it seems, environment be damned.

I do cycle most short commutes. Longer commutes needs a reliable system

  12. Shouldn’t they fix the bloody roads on the island first instead of this, wasting money for no reason also they should work on making the buses more efficient and instead of building a bloody underground they should work on the already shitty public transport and work to get all diesel fueled cars off the road. and how about that finish the hundreds of other roads still in construction cause there isn’t a damn part of the island with seeing a crane and construction work going on. This is not going to work well I think. And people are going to complain more.

  13. The traffic will always be bad because people will never want to walk anywhere in the August heat or January storms..

I believe a better solution would be to go fully electric. For public transport that could mean more but smaller buses going more frequently. For individuals we can offer small Smart like e vehicles.

Also adding ebikes and more e scooters in the most populated areas would help.
