A strong and widespread wind event is expected across Bulgaria on Wednesday, May 13, bringing noticeably cooler air and unsettled conditions in many regions. A yellow weather code has been issued for 20 areas across northern, northwestern, central, and eastern parts of the country due to expected strong gusts.
Meteorologists forecast a moderate to strong west-northwest wind over Northern Bulgaria and parts of the Upper Thracian Plain, with the atmosphere becoming increasingly unstable during the afternoon. Cloud cover will remain variable, but conditions will deteriorate later in the day as convective clouds develop.
Forecasters note that “after noon, cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds will form in the southern regions, bringing short but locally intense rainfall, thunder, and possible hail.” These storm cells are expected to be scattered but at times intense.
Minimum temperatures overnight will range between 7°C and 12°C, with Sofia near 8°C. Daytime highs are expected to stay relatively subdued for mid-May, reaching 17°C to 22°C across most areas, while the capital will peak around 16°C.
In mountainous regions, cloud cover will be more pronounced in the afternoon, especially over Rila-Rhodope, Strandzha, and Sakar. Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected in many locations, with snow possible above 1800 meters. A strong and occasionally stormy west-northwest wind will further reinforce the influx of colder air, leading to a drop in daytime temperatures. At 1200 meters, highs will be near 10°C, while at 2000 meters temperatures will be close to 2°C.
Along the Black Sea coast, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, with increasing instability in the southern coastal areas later in the day. Localized showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. Winds from the northwest will range from moderate to strong, and sea temperatures will remain between 15°C and 16°C. Wave activity is expected at around 2 on the Beaufort scale.
In a broader Balkan context, conditions will remain relatively cold for the season, particularly in eastern and southern areas where wind activity will be strongest. Cloudiness will dominate much of the region, though some southern and northwestern zones will still experience longer sunny intervals. Scattered short-lived showers are expected across parts of the peninsula.
