Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Matthew Wright slams 70th anniversary celebrations

  1. Our Parish Council organised a Platinum Jubilee festival for less than £1000.

There was free music. Free bouncy castles. Some stalls from various charities and ourselves offering tombolas, tuck shops, and coconut shys. Then we lit the beacon.

We made close to £1000 from the stalls alone, so the event was basically cost neutral to the tax payer.

We estimated 500 would turn up, and had 1500 appear.

I was litter picking the morning after the event to tidy up, and had half a dozen villagers approach to tell me how much they valued it.

One older gentleman was close to tears he was so moved by the number of people who had turned out.

I’m a republican, yet I organised the event and volunteered for it BECAUSE I can see value in running something like this for the community after 2 years of COVID cancellations.

This is British culture, whatever your feelings on the royals – GET OVER IT. You’re the miserable minority if you are against occasional parties like this.

  2. I totally get his perspective, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. In fact it’s very likely we may never have a monarch that reigns for 70 years again, since the monarchy may be abolished by the end of the century. So I think it’s justified to make a spectacle of it.

  3. >Matthe Wright slams…

That headline is so overused, I just atomically start playing the Space jam theme in my head
