Police in Dzhebel seized a large number of
cultural and historical artifacts during a specialized operation on May 12.
According to the press office of the regional
directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Kardzhali, police officers searched
the home of a 50-year-old local resident and found 33 irregularly shaped coins
of various sizes, eight rings, and two metal detectors. A single-barrel
shotgun that was being held illegally was also found at the property.
The antiques, metal detectors and weapon were confiscated, and their owner
was detained for up to 24 hours. Pre-trial proceedings have been launched under
Article 278, Paragraph 6 of the Bulgarian Penal Code. Authorities are yet to
determine the nature and origin of the coins.
The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) noted that at the end
of March this year, police in Kardzhali uncovered 10 ancient Roman coins during an inspection. A 40-year-old man was
detained in connection with that case.
