Britain at first had the exact same idea. This was the entire program that Cameron had and won election with. He then put out referendum to strengthen his mandate and he got result that noone expected mostly because of prostest votes of people that thought it was impossible for leave to win.
Regardless of EU internal issues with member states, EU *external* issues with 3rd countries are a different matter.
This is the same EU that decisively brought the US Trump Trade War to a stalemate via reciprocal sanctions, to discourage further escalation without conceding to US demands.
Demonstrated that EU can be pretty decisive against outsiders that cross them. This would of course, apply to the UK.

Since when is Brexit a threat to the EU? The most Eurosceptic country that basically blocked any further levels of integration leaving was surely a good thing?
