Thought it was interesting. I referred to the place as “The Ukraine” to two Ukrainian friends recently and though nothing was said, something in the back of my mind told me something was off, to my own ear.
It always seems to be reported as ‘The Ukraine’ in British media. Always feels off when they report the nation as such, when its very much an independent nation and not a region of the Soviet Union anymore.
Interesting. I always thought Russian didn’t have “the” (hence leaving it out in cheesy russian impressions), so I never understood the origin of this.
