Slovakia has become one of NATO’s main ammunition producers and commercially supplies ammunition to Kyiv “in millions, and this number will continue to grow.” This was stated at the Bucharest Nine Summit by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini , reports TERAZ.SK.

Why It Matters

Relations between Ukraine and Slovakia have been going through a difficult period due to the often pro-Russian stance of Prime Minister Robert Fico. However, after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban lost the election, Fico may change his policy to a more moderate one, LIGA.net Kurt Volker, a former US diplomat and former US State Department special envoy for Ukraine, explained .

According to Pellegrini, Ukraine now has some of the best skills and knowledge of modern warfare, so it can offer its experience to neighboring countries. He called Ukraine “an inspiration on how to arm the Slovak armed forces.”.

The Slovak president also emphasized that NATO is and will remain united, despite some tensions between the United States and other member states.

“Of course, it is necessary to strengthen the European pillar in NATO, not as a separate entity, but to strengthen our responsibility for defense and to strengthen our ability to defend within NATO. Which, of course, is also linked to the need to increase defense spending,” Pellegrini added .

According to him, Slovakia is preparing to approve a new modified long-term plan for the creation of the armed forces. It “will reflect the need for a gradual increase in spending on both weapons and dual-use projects.”.

After the Slovak government did not join the Czech initiative to provide Ukraine with ammunition in 2024, the Slovaks decided to organize their own fundraiser. As a result, Ukraine received ammunition, for which Slovak citizens raised more than €4 million. At the end of 2025, Slovakia’s largest ammunition manufacturer, ZVS Holding a.s. , signed a framework agreement with the Slovak Ministry of Defense to supply large-caliber and medium-caliber ammunition worth up to €58 billion over seven years. The arms are offered to EU countries.
