Slovenia is partially reintroducing the environmental tax on all fuels for air pollution caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. From 12 May 2026 to 1 June 2026, the environmental tax on petrol, diesel fuel and heating oil will amount to 25.90 euros per tonne of CO2 emissions.
For all other energy sources, including kerosene, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, heavy fuel oils, as well as gaseous and solid fuels, the environmental tax will remain unchanged at 30.85 euros per tonne of CO2 emissions.
This differentiation takes into account the different uses of energy products, as well as their impact on the environment and end users. The proposed tax level was determined in a way that ensures the adjustment remains price-neutral for final consumers.
The Slovenian government adopted a decree on 23 March to temporarily suspend the environmental tax. The reintroduction was made possible by a decline in wholesale fuel prices.
At the same time, the excise duty on unleaded petrol will be reduced to 0.42625 euros per litre from 0.47457 euros per litre, while excise duties on diesel and heating oil will remain unchanged at their already reduced levels (0.33000 euros and 0.07875 euros per litre, respectively).
