European Commission Backs EU Candidate Status For Ukraine, Moldova

  1. Very positive signal. While EU membership is still quite a distant perspective, significant step was taken today.

Execution of today’s recommendations should open an access to certain structural funds. Good job Russia, something what normally would take years is basically settled now. /s

  2. I do hope this will work. But the chances this will be approved by all member states is small. I won’t be surprised if the Netherlands will be the only one to veto, champion egotistical jerks that they are.

  3. Most of Ukraine’s economy and state institutions have already been wired into the EU system since 2018. To attack Ukraine is to directly attack the EU. Some people don’t realize this.

  4. Congrats Ukraine, Moldova

Goodbye Europe. You couldn’t even send a strong political message (Not to gov) to the people of Georgia.

This decision figuratively or literally will create rivers of blood in Georgia in one or another way.

I support Ukraine in every way, 2 of my younger friends are currently in Severodonetsk fighting for Ukraine. One statement that really was painful to hear was “We see Ukraine fighting for Europe”.

We did the same thing in 2008 and countless times before that without anyone’s help, we didn’t get any support, and we also had war only because we made steps toward Europe. But, Europe fails constantly, again and again, to give a real political signal or even one step for the Georgian people in the last 30 years.

This message definitely won’t be understood in Georgia as they want it in Europe, I know average Georgian and there is close to no trust in Europe, especially after 2008. AND ESPECIALLY under constant Russian propaganda that only attacks Europe and everything European, and now you completely killed any trust that was left. This is one of the darkest days for Georgia and what’s coming in the future will be even worse.

  5. No matter what some might claim, Georgia is in far better condition than Ukraine and Moldova by every metric based on EU standards. We don’t outlaw political parties like Ukraine does, we have more free speech, a lot less corruption than Ukraine, Moldova and even some EU members. Our economy is in better condition than those two as well. We also have more stability.

Things like punishment/scolding will always backfire if used against Georgians. If EU wants us in, this is not the kind of step they should have taken because it’s going to have reverse effect. Either they abandoned us, or completely misjudged Georgian people’s mentality. Candidacy isn’t even membership, even Turkey has it for decades now…

  6. I mean sure, but what does it do in reality. Candidate status does not do much. Pretty much any country in Europe could become a candidate, getting into the EU is the painful part of the process. It can take years, decades even.

  7. They just do a bear’s service to them at the end of the day. Ukraine isn’t even at peace, let alone many other reforms.
