We are coming up to the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Bamber Bridge, a WW2 altercation between Lancashire villagers and US troops, which was sparked off by the villagers refusal to permit racial segregation in their town.

  1. After Lancashire villagers were told to bring in racial segregation by US troops, they put up signs outside pubs saying “black troops only”.

  2. There’s a book which relates to this topic, called the Boys Crusade and it largely covers the American perspective of the invasion of Europe in 44/45.

It discusses how by and large the Brits were sympathetic towards black US troops and apathetic to white troops. To quote the book “One wit said ‘I don’t mind the yanks, shame about those white chaps they brought with them.’”

  3. And the US expected Bamber to bend over for them. The US did it in australia as well and I think, the aussies were fucking pissed off. I mean, not fist fights pissed out but full on fire fight pissed off. I hate to think what would happen if this took place in a major city during the war or London. I think it would have really escalated and be rather hard to conceal.

  4. This story makes me so happy.. why are people interested in segregation based on race..

If they choose to segregate – they should separate assholes from the rest of society

  5. My (late) great granddad was on a ship with an American soldier who called the Indian soldier he was with a racial slur- my granddad punched him right in the face, but then spent the rest of the way there hiding because the American soldier gathered up his much bigger mates to come and batter him
