Vice President J.D. Vance brushed aside speculation about a potential 2028 Republican ticket with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying the topic is among “the few topics” he has little interest in discussing.

The remarks came just days after President Donald Trump publicly floated the idea of a Vance-Rubio ticket during a White House event, fueling early speculation about who could emerge as leading Republican contenders once Trump leaves office.
Speaking during a White House news conference, Vance pushed back on the conversation, suggesting voters would not respond well to politicians focusing on future ambitions so early into a term.
Asked about Trump’s comments, Vance told Newsweek that Americans would likely view unfavorably “someone who’s barely been in one office for a year and a half angling for a job two and a half years down the road.”
“There are few topics I want to talk about less,” he added.
2028 presidential primaries

Although the 2028 presidential primaries remain more than two years away, speculation over possible Republican successors has already intensified. Vance and Rubio, both prominent members of the Trump administration, are widely viewed as potential contenders.
Trump added to that speculation during a dinner honoring law enforcement officers in the White House Rose Garden, where he openly praised both men before the crowd.
“Who likes J.D. Vance?” Trump asked attendees, drawing cheers. “Who likes Marco Rubio?” he then asked, receiving another round of applause.
“Sounds like a good ticket. … That was a perfect ticket. By the way, I do believe that’s a dream team, but these are minor details,” the president said.
Trump also joked while looking toward Vance, “That does not mean you have my endorsement, under any circumstance. I think it sounds like a presidential candidate and a vice presidential candidate.”
2026 midterm elections
Republicans are already speculating about potential 2028 contenders. By: MEGA
No major Republican candidates have formally announced plans for 2028, and most campaigns are not expected to launch until after the 2026 midterm elections. Still, potential contenders are already working to strengthen donor networks and raise their national profiles among GOP voters.
Trump is barred from seeking another term under constitutional limits, ensuring the 2028 race will be open. Vance, closely aligned with Trump’s MAGA movement, and Rubio, who previously sought the presidency in 2016, are both expected to remain central figures in early Republican discussions.
