Woman left with potentially life-changing injury after dog attack in Lancaster

  1. Already guessed it was a staffie before I even opened the link.

They and pitbulls are a menace. In a very, very serious situation such as a pitt or staffie locking onto one of your young children in a life threatening event, you can disable the dog by shoving your thumb through its eye socket as hard as you can and then curling upwards into its frontal lobe. It kills the dog instantly; but if its a choice between your child’s life or the dog’s life, then that’s no choice at all.

  2. If they are not on the owners property they should have to be muzzled by law. Similar to what Ireland do for certain breeds.

  3. Looks like the dog owner set the dog on her on purpose. Should be GBH with intent. Maximum sentence of life in prison.

We need to allow the courts to treat dogs as a weapon.

  4. I have a mastiff. There are massive differences between different molosser breeds. You can’t put Bullmastiff, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Cane Corso etc in the same group.

Don’t get me wrong – im in favour of breed bans. Pit bulls obvious, and they need to update the law on these to include all the designer mixes of XL bully’s etc. there are tonnes of dogs missing too – Bandogs, Cane Corso are two that should be on the list straight away. I’d maybe add Rotties, too.

Edit: also worth noting that the SMALLEST mastiff breed is probably 45kg. The BIGGEST staffy is about 20kg. There is absolutely no similarity between the two. If it looks like a staffy but the size of a mastiff, it’s one of the new pit bull mixes designed to get around breed band.

  5. Here we go again, another “staffs are evil and should be banned” agenda post.

The number of dog attacks in the UK is very low. Most years there is only a single digit number for serious dog attacks.

I won’t lie that a majority are from staffs, but when you have for example, three fatal attacks in a year and two are staffs, it’s too little of a data sample to extrapolate anything meaningful.

Instead of blaming the animal, how about we start thinking about the conditions the animals are living in, and what sort of people the owners are?

I’ve worked with many dogs over my lifetime, and not once have I ever had a bad experience with a staff. Many other breeds have attacked and bit me though.

And before anyone makes the argument that anecdotal experiences is not evidence, neither is a few one off attacks reported by the news.

The solution to this problem, I firmly believe, is to ban “puppy mills,” and require any dog owner to go through an intense training and vetting process to get certification they are fit to be an owner.

Any dog can be a danger to others if mistreated and mismanaged. Banning dog ownership will just lead to the creation of half and half breeds, and drive the problem underground as owners will resort more to these unethical “puppy mills” and other unethical establishments to acquire the dog breed they want.

We can’t pretend the problem will go away just because the law says so, we need to address it at the root cause.

  6. The dog in that photo had a face like a deflated football/basketball.

From the article, did the guy set the dog on her? It goes straight from him accusing them of nearly colliding with his wife and kid, to her hitting the dog to try to get it away.
