Funny how Simon Coveney was offered that large heavy lift transport plane at a knock down price there last year, but now with the rising cost of eh everything, it will probably cost double.
But ya know, lets blame those on welfare for the wasted tax money.
and the skyrocketing cost of the children’s hospital
I think we should have at least 1 large aircraft. Like after Afghanistan we had to rely on a different countries air force to get people out.
Also it should be capable of carrying large troops and or armored personnel vehicles. These are necessary in peace keeping missions and we should be self reliant
Yeah but monetarily, will the cost of owning and maintaining one outweigh the cost of sporadically renting on when a country of 5 million people need one.
An Airbus Atlas costs €110 million and it’ll be in service for at least 20 years. Ireland’s a wealthy country – the economy’s not gonna crash because of one plane.
People keep going on about Afghanistan as justification. Do we need a hugely expensive plane sitting around just on the off-chance we need to fly into a warzone once every decade? When we need heavy lift we rent it.
There are much better (military) uses for these funds if they are available.
Fuck that. I am not getting drafted in to fight in Yugoloslavia or Rhodesia.
Guys we send rather few soldiers overseas …the Afghanistan situation could be easily fixed with an understanding between NATO/ Britain and Ireland….to manage heavy lift …no need to buy a large plane for this role as it probably happens once every 10 years . The maintenance and running costs would be huge….buying long range armed drones to police our Shores is the way to go .
