Not really, unless we take Vienna’s approach of a stagnant population for a century, I don’t think the mass deportations to achieve that would be popular.
Vienna (and Austria) is a very high public order environment. Imagine such forms of communal or co-op public housing in Ireland where the typical antisocial crowd could run amok knowing that their tenant rights are highly protected. A minority would ruin it for everyone else since we don’t enforce public order here.
Guillotines are the starting point of any housing model for Ireland.
Starting to think they’ll never do anything. The crisis gets worse daily and I’m yet to see this government do even one thing to address it?
Just build a shitload of affordable housing ffs.
Stop talking about “models” and “policies”. The solution is to build at least 250,000 new housing units immediately!
If Irish politicians and industry leaders say that is “impossible” then hire the Chinese to do it. China rebuild its entire county over the last 40 years. Most of China’s 1.4 billion people went from living in rundown buildings with no electricity and plumbing to living in modern apartments with high speed Internet and community swimming pools. I lived and worked in China and saw this first hand. If the Chinese can do that, then why can’t we build a quarter million apartments?
Like everyone else, I am sick of Irish leaders’ lame excuses as to why they can’t get anything done. They are either stupid, lazy, or deliberately want the Irish people to suffer. Those are the only three possibilities! Other nations actually solve their problems, so why don’t we????
Apparently it’s a load of bolllox cos Vienna’s population has been dropping for a century so they’ve loads of apartments anyway
A large cohort of the population have been brainwashed into thinking the problem is “too complex” to fix . As long as that kind of ignorance is fostered it will be tough adopting any model to fix the problem .
Help to buy expanded to all houses, mortgage guarantee for first time buyers and make it mandatory for banks to give a mortgage if your rent has been more than your mortgage would be for x amount of years.
So… Vienna is 60% social housing. That’s how this model works.
Do people understand that? That means we would have to build upwards of 100k social homes. And that’s THE PLAN. That’s what we’re doing in the next 10 years.
This isn’t home ownership or affordable housing, this is social and public housing. Anyone who wants to own their own home is excluded from the Vienna model. They can certainly apply, and personally I think the threshold for the housing list needs to be brought upwards because people earning over 35k/y can’t afford to live – but we are building this amount, or just under.
Does there need to be more? Probably. Will they be done too late? More than likely. Will something go wrong to further scupper the effort (like China buying all the lumber and steel, or the war in Ukraine fucking up steel production)? Yes, it absolutely will.
But we’re going to need way, way more than just building our way out of the problem. Building takes too long to complete, and it only benefits those willing to buy quickly at the highest price right now.
Personally, I would love to see a dramatic rent lowering and freeze, across the board. But I’m a filthy socialist. So….
Vienna also was the centre of a large Empire and still to this day doesn’t have as many people living in Vienna as it did before WW1. Not to mention what went on during WW2 as well and you get a city with a fuck load of housing that very siddenly didn’t have a lot of people living there anymore.
