3 days before D-Day, a 21 year old Irish woman named Maureen Flavin took her hourly barometer reading and sent it to Dublin. She had no idea that this single data point would be sent directly to Eisenhower and averted disaster by delaying D-Day due to an incoming storm.

  1. This is a great retort for when the uberBrits start banging on about how Ireland let Nazi Germany do as it pleased. Ireland was responsible for D-Day not being a disaster. Get that up ya.

  2. For anyone who wants to know, there’s actually a small museum dedicated to the story and other notable stories in the lighthouse that she lived in. It’s the Blacksod Lighthouse on the very bottom of Mullet Peninsula in Mayo.

  3. Unfortunately the rest of Ireland during the time period did not have even half the spine that Maureen Flavin had, and denied aiding the Allies in any way shape or form by staying neutral. Maureen truly is an absolute hero.
