3 days before D-Day, a 21 year old Irish woman named Maureen Flavin took her hourly barometer reading and sent it to Dublin. She had no idea that this single data point would be sent directly to Eisenhower and averted disaster by delaying D-Day due to an incoming storm.

I was wondering if this was true, and found this article on it. Absolutely amazing!
Last pilot from the battle of Britain is an Irishman. His name is John Hemmingway and is 102.
This is a great retort for when the uberBrits start banging on about how Ireland let Nazi Germany do as it pleased. Ireland was responsible for D-Day not being a disaster. Get that up ya.
Fun fact: her forcast was inaccurate. A tradition which Met Eireann continues to this day!
She doesn’t look 21.
Fair play Maureen. Made a grand bowl of porridge too.
Go on ta fuck Maureen 🇮🇪💪
This post is going to the front page. It’s an Irish related post with a mention of something American related too.
Some woman to have the fry on, is Maureen.
No fair, the amount of times I’ve sent people emails and the house of representatives haven’t given me a plaque.
Thus inspiring the phrase “Travelling to Flavin.”
Fuck yeah, science!
My father in law was the original reporter on this. It was in Mayo Now originally. I think he even took the photo
For anyone who wants to know, there’s actually a small museum dedicated to the story and other notable stories in the lighthouse that she lived in. It’s the Blacksod Lighthouse on the very bottom of Mullet Peninsula in Mayo.
Well done
What type of 21-year-old woman spends her life taking “hourly barometric readings”?
The story needs more context. LOL
On behalf of my two great uncles who stormed the beaches at Normandy. Thank you.🌺

I saw a short about this at the Chicago Irish film festival. Pretty neat!
Oh my God…
Amazing! What an honour… 😳
Unfortunately the rest of Ireland during the time period did not have even half the spine that Maureen Flavin had, and denied aiding the Allies in any way shape or form by staying neutral. Maureen truly is an absolute hero.
