As per Times of Malta article below, I just would like to say , what are they expecting if when you try to access HBO or Disney+ you are told the service is unavailable in the country? . I have been waiting for those services to arrive here for years and still nothing.
I am not supporting piracy, I just want to show that maybe people consume more piracy in Malta than in the EU average not due to any inherent characteristic to the country but rather because access is limited when compared to the rest of Europe.
What do you think about it?

I have a Netflix subscription and an amazon prime subscription and I still need to download some of my favourite shows illegally hehe.
Honestly, I’d happily pay the subscription instead of streaming torrents onto my laptop and getting them on the TV (I’m not very techy so it’s actually a big hassle for me and I often just end up watching the shows directly on my laptop hehe)
I would absolutely pay for Disney etc to have my favourite shows available. Of course we have to pirate, we barely have anything available
I wonder why maybe because service isn’t offered to Malta?
When service providers get greedy, people will go after other solutions. When it was Netflix alone it was quite reasonable, but then others wanted to dip their finger in the pie too and the situation got very messy. There is no way on earth I am paying more than one service provider.
Couple that with Netflix getting more greedy and increasing pricing while crying foul over people sharing their password, and more will return to dust their pirate hats off.
People shouldn’t be subscribed to media organisations that support child grooming anyway (ie. Disney and Netflix).
I am not surprised. Who can afford things like that with a minimum wage of € 792.
Disney+ is coming to Malta next week
What’s the alternative? Maltese TV sucks, and the channels on GO and Melita also suck. TSN Sports only comes with a subscription with the other channels. Netflix content is getting stale. Also, far too many streaming services now. So you are now looking towards like €60 per month just to cover 5 or 6 subscriptions.
The costs of having all these subscriptions going on/Geo fencing.
What do they expect?Only thing I pay for is netflix and even then I’m thinking of cutting it out because of how small the Maltese library is.
new pc game = 70euro. torrent = 0 euro. young people earn 800/month and play a game a week. wow i wonder why.

its just more feasible. while convenience is nice, who’s going to pay €50+ a month for Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon prime and whatever other service you can name?
If I were to pirate anything where I live , I can be 90% sure ill have to pay a fine. There groups set up to find out who is pirating stuff – which then blackmail you into paying for them not to report you.
In Malta, everything on my laptop was from pirate Bay. Hypothetically speaking that is. Nobody cares in malta
I think what we need to keep in mind is the actual sample size right here.
Yes, the percentages in both scenarios are slightly higher but they only display “the truth” to once again annoy/shame/displease/divide (you name it anyway you prefer) the Maltese population.
A number of people in Malta eligible for this survey are clearly lower than 100 000 individuals (guaranteed) where in Germany for example it would most probably be in the millions…
Guess which country concerned organisations would prefer to tackle first? The % or the sheer number?
I’m from the Philippines and I also have a netflix subscription. When I came here, I was expecting that netflix will offer more than PH. But it turns out be the other way around.
Back at the start of tv/movie streaming when it was just Netflix, the TV and movie industry had a chance. They had the perfect opportunity to end piracy. But of course, as a shock to no one, they got greedy!
They saw Netflix making money and that apparently was just unacceptable, ignoring that they were also getting paid. They wanted it all. So here we are with dozens of services most of which at best offer 1-2 things of worth.
Netflix, Amazon & Disney+. They’re worth it, great back catalogues and new exclusives that make it worth the money. Most of the rest just don’t have the content and as a result, are just charging way too much. If all your pushing out the US TV shows that have already been broadcast fully paid for.
So why is piracy still a thing? As always, greed. But now it’s the studio’s greed, not the pirates.
Many VPNs let you stream from different countries, e.g PIA is 1 euro a month to stream from UK, US etc.
we pirate because maltese ISPs let us & it`s another thing which is engrained in maltese culture. Wouldnt be surprised if the richest maltese ppl and politicians also have an illegal IPTV and stream stuff….
The stagnant income coupled with the consistently spiking cost of living never helped, either (and looking at statistics, been going for decades as well); Even if that is fixed it’s too late to fix the bred mentality of avoiding to pay a cent for something you can get for “free”.
Maybe a foreigner would think the mindset is silly, but that foreigner likely makes 40k+ euro on average at the bare minimum.
I used to buy original CDs of my favourite artists. I will describe one of my typical experinces:
I went to Exotique in Valletta and asked for a particular CD. They had one and the girl told me that it was scratched. She told me it cost Lm 8.50 (Euro 19.80) and this was some 20 years ago.
I asked for a discount since it was scrached. Grace Borg emerged and shouted at me : “I’d rather not sell it than give a discount.”
Stupidly, I bought it.
Exotique went bust while I happily downloaded music. FU Grace Borg.
Aaand again with the “teenagers need to get off their phones!!” Mf theres barely anything to do in malta these days without getting burned to death or freezing up like an icecube
I just came here from Japan with D+, Prime Vid and TV+ subs all in yen. I’m using a VPN to maintain access to the full catalog. Yen is weak now, so it’s pretty cheap.
