Amnesty International UK is ‘colonialist and institutionally racist’, damning inquiry concludes

  1. Can we actually just have an article that calls all molecules in the known universe racist and be done with it? This slow drip is killing me.

I just want somebody to decisively tell me that the cosmos and everything in it is white supremacy, then maybe we can start talking about other stuff

  2. Some of the examples given are ridiculous.

It’s not a crime to be rude about a minority celebrity.

It’s not racist to have a negative opinion about fasting.

  3. To the people in here getting all mad and upset, they’re not talking about you bro they are talking about the charity Amnesty International UK.

And many charities *are* absolutely rife with bullying, racism and colonialist attitudes.

  4. AIUK does suffer from having volunteers. These people need to be self funding and so tend to come from the white demographic. These volunteers are then in ideal positions to apply for permanent jobs so the organisation is quite white/middle class as a result.

I worked at AIUK many years back – I don’t think the people working there are racist and much of the organisations policies are about local people driving changes supported by the wider organisation. AIUK has some issues but I don’t think that racism is the biggest one.

It seems Kate Allen has finally left as the CEO I think she was fucking awful and hopefully having her gone will help AIUK move forward.

  5. > An independent review found that racial discrimination, bullying and white savourism is endemic within the award-winning human rights charity

An independent waste of money by the sounds of it. They sound eager to derail any good work amnesty do by forcing them to waste time on box ticking nonsense.

  6. Some background:

The inquiry from Global HPO was commissioned by AIUK, after staff had been complaining about racism within the organisation for several years.

    https://www.civilsociety.co.uk/news/amnesty-bosses-apologise-over-racism-claims.html

The international board of Amnesty International commissioned Howlett Brown to conduct focus groups on racism at each country’s section, and the focus group for Amnesty UK found that there were many allegations of racism which were not being taken seriously by management. They included:

    * Overt use of racist language, including derogatory highly offensive phrases, informal complaints in respect of which were rejected as ‘overly-sensitive’ in the context of ‘jokes’.
    * Aggressive and dismissive behaviour, particularly over email, and often directed towards staff in offices in the Global South.
    * Black staff were particularly aware of their capability being questioned consistently and without justification. This included [local] staff feeling disempowered and sidelined on projects, often with staff questioning their expertise and capability directly or by implication.
    * A lack of awareness or sensitivity to religious practices which results in problematic comments and behaviours.
    […]
Daily microaggressive behaviour, including touching the hair of black colleagues and comments expressing surprise at a black person’s capabilities.
    […]
staff being ignored or dismissed repeatedly over email by colleagues in London. A common comment in the groups was to observe that they thought they were imagining it, but it happens repeatedly and only stops when another London or white colleague joins the email discussion.

In response, AIUK commissioned Global HPO to conduct an inquiry and have committed to implementing Global HPO’s recommendations in full:

  7. There have definitely been issues in countries like Haiti where volunteers have been accused of some terrible acts against the locals, although those are not unique to Amnesty either. Organisations might have great purposes themselves but they are staffed by people and people can be racist. It is up to the organisation to tackle issues when they surface and not bury them in the hope no one ever finds out about it.

  8. I’d question a few things in this report:

-Are Global HPOs recommendations both relevant and proportional? It’s difficult to tell without further context.

-Are all Global HPOs findings fully supported with robust evidence? The comment deeming AIUK’s board to be “amateurish” is incredibly unprofessional and is an opinion rather than a finding. I’ve done similar work to this myself and would never ever word a report this way for the reasons I’ve outlined. It simple isn’t justifiable and the lack of professionalism leads me to question the report in its entirety.

-Are Global HPO objective or out to do a hatchet job? I don’t know the specifics of who appointed them but without seeing the evidence it’s impossible to say. Obviously supporting evidence is confidential but I call bullshit on the overall tone of the report. Again, I speak as someoneone who has professional expertise in this area.

  9. Anything can be twisted into being racist these people would be out of a job if they couldn’t call something or complain that something intangible is Racist

  10. Why does the existence of racism in different forms & it being pointed out anger people so much? There are no countries or governments that are perfect and we should acknowledge and try to seek change for the cracks in the countries we love.

The Albion has fantastic [music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEORlArLI3c&ab_channel=MVCH), foods, celebrations like May Day, Plough Monday, Jack in the Green, Cheese rolling, Burns night etc., Architecture (be it grand or our countryside buildings), Our rolling landscapes, Morris dancing, Maypole, bonfire night, cups of tea and the pub.

Those things exist alongside racism, corruption, classism, poverty, sexism, funding/creating/participating in wars etc.

I’d like to see Patriotism here reclaimed from nationalism and I’d like to see this country held accountable as well as celebrated

  11. I love that “middle class” is quoted as one of the findings of this report, as if it’s some kind of swear word as well as “privledged”. Can you only be working class and poor to be part of a charity?

  12. >“Dysfunctional internal activism” – in which staff view anti-racism and fair treatment as “unwinnable” endeavours

    >“Our view is that ‘white saviour, middle class and privileged’ is a perception that forms an important part of the AIUK narrative about its history and legacy,”

When UK charities are being attacked for having a history involving white, comfortable, well off people being the main people involved in helping out, yeah, that responding to that really is unwinnable.

  13. Yeah! Let’s get rid of anyone remotely standing up for human rights in the UK! Booooring, I wanna see right to fair trial go, right to water, right to food go the same way as right to protest!

GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN, LOOONG LIVE OUR NOOOOBLE QUEEN.

Enjoy your country you sadistucs fucks, I’ll be gone in 5.

  14. Yeah! Let’s get rid of anyone remotely standing up for human rights in the UK! Booooring, I wanna see right to fair trial, right to water, right to food go the same way as right to protest!

GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN, LOOONG LIVE OUR NOOOOBLE QUEEN.

Enjoy your country you sadistic mentalists, I’ll be gone in 5.

  15. As a immigrant I can say so what, everyone is. I really don’t gat that bashing on English when most of the world is xenophobic/racist, wherever you go you see same shit. It’s like England should hold toy higher standard for God knows what reason.

  16. Have we devalued the term ‘institutionally racist’ now? It doesn’t mean ‘there are some people who work there who are racist’. It means that the organisation itself, its policies, the actions it takes and promotes are racist.

  17. I think a lot of problems come with being so multi cultural (there is not a problem with that before someone jumps down my throat).

Cultures clash and therefore people clash – it takes time (a lot) for things to become the “norm”

Generally in my day to day day, I don’t see any racism and from my experience the country is fine.

  18. Wow, the examples are far reaching. Not surprising since GLOBAL HPO is a private limited liability company. They would have alot to gain by circumventing problems and than having to find fixes.
