Liverpool’s summer rebuild is shaping up to be one of the most significant in the club’s modern history.
The recruitment team at Anfield have an enormous amount of work to do, and the next few weeks will define what direction this club moves in.
Pedro Goncalves, known universally in Portugal as Pote, the Sporting CP attacking midfielder and left winger has been one of the most consistently productive players in Portuguese football for the better part of five years.
And according to Jornal de Notícias, Sporting’s management are now open to accepting interesting offers for the 27-year-old this summer.
The club’s directors, who in previous years blocked every attempt to move him, now believe the time has come for Pote to pursue new experiences.
His potential farewell could come as soon as Sporting’s final league fixture against Gil Vicente.
The numbers behind his career at Alvalade make the interest from Liverpool and Aston Villa entirely understandable.
Since joining Sporting in 2020 he has produced 97 goals and 57 assists in 237 matches, elite output for a player who spends large portions of games operating from wide areas rather than as a central striker.
This season alone he has registered 15 goals and eight assists across 39 appearances in all competitions, including 13 goals and seven assists in 26 Liga Portugal matches.
He averages 3.74 shots per 90 minutes and scores once every 6.15 attempts.
His FotMob match rating of 7.61 in the Portuguese league places him in the top 96th percentile for shot attempts and goals among wingers in the division.
His versatility adds another layer of appeal.
He plays primarily as a left winger but regularly drops into central midfield and the number 10 role, making him the kind of multifunctional attacking player that modern top clubs covet.
He also has history in England, having spent time with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy setup earlier in his career.
Liverpool’s interest in Pote dates back to 2021 when his explosive breakout at Sporting drew comparisons to Bruno Fernandes and prompted extensive scouting from Anfield.
The pursuit stalled repeatedly due to his €80 million release clause, but his current projected transfer value has dropped significantly to the €30 to €35 million range, making a deal considerably more realistic.
West Ham retain an interest, while Al Nassr have reportedly tabled a $35 million bid to reunite him with Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia.
That offer from the Gulf could complicate matters for Premier League clubs significantly.
Both Liverpool and Aston Villa have followed him for years, and with Sporting finally opening the door, the clubs that move quickly will have the advantage.
For Liverpool, whose attack is about to lose its greatest ever servant, Pote could be exactly the kind of creative, high-output signing this rebuild demands.
