US special envoy Jeff Landry, appointed by President Donald Trump last year to advance American interests in Greenland, arrived in Nuuk on May 17.
Landry, who is also the governor of Louisiana, has previously supported Trump’s proposal to bring the Arctic territory under US control, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.
The idea has been firmly rejected by both Greenlandic and Danish authorities, who have repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale.
Footage broadcast by Danish public broadcaster DR showed Landry disembarking from a plane upon arrival in Nuuk.
He is scheduled to attend the “Future Greenland” business conference on 19–20 May and will be accompanied by US Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery.
The conference organiser, Business Greenland, said Landry was not formally invited but noted that the event is open to all participants who register.
The US Embassy in Copenhagen said earlier this week that Landry and Howery would meet “a wide range of Greenlanders” with the aim of strengthening economic ties, expanding cooperation and improving mutual understanding between the United States and Greenland.
In an effort to ease tensions, Greenland, Denmark and the United States have previously agreed to hold high-level diplomatic talks on the issue, although no outcome has yet been announced.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said earlier this week that discussions with Washington also include the question of an increased US military presence in the region.
So far, no official meetings between Landry and Greenlandic political leaders have been confirmed during the visit.
