Aussie is an Australian Kelpie, and we think he is very handsome.
He is 3.5 years old. He walks very well on the lead and he loves his walks He shows no reaction to the other dogs at our shelter other than sniffing them through the wire of his run and wagging his tail, and he is sharing with Beryl, a female Beagle mix.
If he is to be rehomed with another dog, a meet and greet will be essential. We don’t know how he is with cats. Kelpies are energetic dogs, bred to herd sheep, cattle or other animals, and would have similar high energy levels to those of a collie.
It is important that any family adopting Aussie understands his exercise needs and is prepared to meet those needs, otherwise the Kelpie, as a breed, would become bored and could become destructive. Kelpies are affectionate with their owners, and we have found Aussie to be very friendly with our volunteers.
Kelpies are very trainable, and like collies, they need mental stimulation. They cannot be left alone for hours, and therefore Aussie must go to an active family where there is someone at home for a good part of the day and available to give him exercise and the necessary stimulation.
We don’t think a Kelpie would be best suited to first time dog owners, some experience would be preferable.
Aussie has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped (chip number 972274200231268, origin Ireland).
