Danish and Swedish socialists fight against minimum wage directive

  1. Title talks about socialists, article is about social democrats…

edit: I see the original article in German does use social-democrats in the title. So it was mistranslated.

  2. I don’t see how setting a minimum threatens the ability of unions to collectively bargain. It’s a minimum, not a maximum.

  3. This doesn’t need to be a thing on EU level. But then so many other things that are doesn’t need to be.

  4. I agree with the Nordic social-democrats here. They have this system where the unions are strong and can negotiate good wages. Why should they modify a system that clearly works? On the other hand, some provisions for a European minimum wage should be enacted in the EU because the rest of the countries do not have that Nordic system and will never have

  5. Problem with a minimum wage is that conservatives and liberals can lower it as they please of they get enough mandate.

  6. What I’ve read about this directive previously, it doesn’t mean member states should replace current union bargaining. Rather the member states can reach the result of the directive via collective bargaining. Like in Finland the unions and employers negotiate the wages and government enforces this agreement to apply to all sectors of these unions and employers. De facto this results in minimum wage in most jobs, and EU commission has said earlier this is a viable method to reach the goal of the directive. The idea of directives is to direct countries to reach some end point, and gives freedom for member states to decide how. If Nordic Countries reach the aim of the directive with collective bargaining enforced by the state, then in theory it could fulfill the directive.

  7. Note to all non-nordic Europeans: Just because you don’t understand it, it doesn’t mean Nordics should adopt something this stupid for them.

You don’t even have to understand it. It’s complicated… But you have to know this:

Nordics fought for what they have now. They certainly don’t want anything subpar to that. Next time time you look to a Nordic country and wonder “why don’t we have something like that?”, the answer pretty much always falls back on this.

So, if you want what’s good in life, abolish your minimum wage and adopt the Nordic model. Truth be told, it should be default in the EU. Not starvation wage excuse to exploit bullshit.
