Milwaukee refugees waiting for green cards are facing a scramble as cuts to SNAP and Medicaid approach. The cuts will create gaps in nutrition and health care that will put serious stress on Milwaukee’s nonprofit aid system, advocates say. FoodShare cuts begin July 1, and people with FoodShare and Medicaid will lose both benefits by Oct. 1. About 7,200 people in Wisconsin will lose their benefits, and 63% of them live in Milwaukee County. The cuts are hitting Milwaukee’s Burmese refugee community as green card processing is frozen for people from Myanmar and 38 other countries. Food pantry leaders say demand is already rising, and they are trying to prepare for more hardship ahead.
