We all know that Europe is being hit hard by another Covid wave, but why [aren’t the governments purchasing the new antiviral pills that have recently been approved in the US](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/21/pandemic-antiviral-pills/)? The US has already ordered [10 million pills](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/16/administration-purchases-pfizer-anti-covid-pill/) but it looks like Europe and the CDU/CSU have set themselves up for another failure that could ultimately reach levels last seen at the start of the year when they failed to secure enough vaccine doses. Why do the ruling parties ignore the most promising new method to fight the pandemic?

  1. Well, I think primarily because US approval means little in the jurisdiction of other countries and the EU.

We have to approve it first.

  2. You think the people scared of the vaccine would be willing to take this new pill? I seriously doubt it.

It’s a good tool to help the vaccinated (or the involuntarily unvaccinated) in the (rare) case of a serious infection, but wasted on the rest. Don’t really need huge stockpiles for this.
